Holiday Concert 2015 Repertoire
The following were the selections we performed for our concert on December 12, 2015.
Magnificat.....Kim André Arnesen
This liturgical text sung in Latin is a new setting this year for mixed choirs by the Norwegian composer, Kim Arnesen. Also known as the Song of Mary from the Gospel of St. Luke, this beautiful work features a soprano soloist, strings, organ, and piano accompaniment.
The Work of Christmas.....Dan Forrest
Composed last year for a Methodist church in Charlotte, NC, the poignant text by Howard Thurman speaks about the promise of peace on earth beginning with the way humanity strives for it after the holiday celebrations are over.
Lo, How a Rose/The Rose.....arr. Craig Hella Johnson
A unique mashup of the classic carol by Praetorius, found in many hymnals, with the popular song made famous in the rendition by Bette Midler.
A Merry Christmas Medley.....arr. Greg Gilpin
Six of the best-known carols of the season: Deck the Halls, Go Tell It on the Mountain, Angels We Have Heard on High, The First Noel, The Holly and the Ivy, and Joy to the World.
Hanerot Halalu (Light the Candles).....arr. Becky Slagle Mayo
Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, celebrates the Maccabees’ victory over the Syrian Greeks in 165 B.C. This song is sung as the candles in the menorah are lit.
Caroling, Caroling/Ah, Bleak and Chill the Wintry Wind.....Alfred Burt
Now 50 years old, these carols have become standard songs of the Christmas holidays.
Baby, It’s Cold Outside.....Frank Loesser/Kirby Shaw
This jazz standard of the season has been sung by many artists since its debut in the American swing era.
